Urgent appeal from homeless charity to people who are stockpiling

A Bath homeless charity has asked people who may be stockpiling hand sanitiser to help people in the city without access to hand washing facilities.

The request, in a tweet on Friday (March 13) came as supermarket shelves accross the country were stripped of essential items including toilet roll and washing products.

Stockpiling appears to have continued during Saturday with numerous pictures of empty shelves posted in social media.

It follows the government moving its response to the global coronavirus pandemic from containment to delaying and reducing the peak of infections.

People are asked to quarantine themselves at home for seven days if they exhibit either a persistent new cough, or an increased temperature.

Homeless charity Julian House said it was short of hand sanitizer for vulnerable homeless people and staff in its Bath hostel on Friday and appealed for people to share supplies.

It tweeted: "Urgent Request: We're in desperate need of hand sanitizer for our clients and staff in our hostel.

"If you've been stockpiling at home, please consider donating a bottle to us to help protect our vulnerable and at risk clients suffering from homelessness."
