UK distancing measures could leave homeless people out in cold, experts warn

Space in homeless shelters could drop by as much as two-thirds because of physical distancing regulations, experts have warned, leaving rough sleepers with nowhere to turn as winter approaches.

Charities and councils are scrambling to put together plans to provide winter accommodation for a growing number of people left homeless due to the economic impact of the coronavirus crisis.

Night shelters are still closed in line with government guidance to prevent the spread of Covid-19, and charities fear that if they reopen they will only be able to house a fraction of those they previously could.
