Thousands could be made homeless when ban on evictions ends next month

Thousands of people could end up sleeping on the streets when the coronavirus eviction ban for renters ends next month, campaigners have warned. Housing minister Lord Greenhalgh confirmed the suspension on evictions, which has been in place since March, would not be extended in August and called this an ‘important step towards ending lockdown’.

The peer said courts will begin to process possession cases again from August 24 after they were put on hold in England and Wales during the pandemic. Campaigners say there is not enough support for people who may have fallen behind on rent due to losing their job or being furloughed, with figures suggesting the number of households made homeless after being evicted over rent arrears could treble.
